Debbie Teubes – Counselling Psychologist BA (Hons) Psych, M.Psych

Debbie obtained her degrees in psychology in South Africa and was also educated in Europe and Canada. She has 17 years experience working in the addictions treatment field. Debbie speaks English, Dutch and German fluently.

Debbie worked for 12 years as in-house psychologist for an international company with 5,000 employees worldwide. During this time, she became aware of the profoundly devastating impact drug addiction can have on individuals, their families, relationships, careers and on society in general.

Debbie has extensive experience of working as a psychologist in residential drug and alcohol rehabilitation settings where she has learned to appreciate the power of a safe, supportive environment away from the usual triggers and temptations an addicted person encounters in everyday life.

Debbie has co-created a hands-on counseling method whereby a person can use play therapy to discover and express subconscious insights in a tangible and memorable way which is powerfully motivating and empowering. She followed various hypnotherapy and coaching courses and learned to appreciate the power of visualization in the recovery process. Focusing on a preferred future is often much more helpful and empowering than dwelling on the mistakes of the past.

Since every person is unique, the causes of addiction and the pathways to recover differ vastly from person to person, Debbie´s approach incorporates individual attention as a key component of the recovery process along with self-insight, support and encouragement.

Debbie realizes that addiction is often the result of a genetic predisposition and that it was usually a person’s “solution” or “band-aid” to much deeper issues. Once these underlying issues are addressed a client can gain proper insight into the nature of addiction and recovery is often as simple as breaking destructive habits and thought processes, learning healthier habits and learning to address and confront problematic issues rather than temporarily “escaping” the discomfort it causes.

Debbie is particularly excited about the new program we are about to launch which will also provide support to the families of our clients and allow the transition into a healthier lifestyle to occur smoothly. She has studied co-dependence extensively and knows that change is often traumatic. Addiction wreaks havoc not only on the person suffering from the addiction but also on the people in his or her environment.
