Whole Person Complementary Therapies
Addictions treatment center Breathing Space Thailand recognizes the importance and value of supporting our clients in adopting new, healthy methods of relaxation and also ‘reward’ to counteract a very often deeply ingrained pattern of thinking and behavior, in the mindset of many people commencing the process of addictions recovery, whereby a person’s substance use has become intrinsically linked with a sense of enjoyment, pleasure and relaxation.
The inclusion of complementary therapy in the Breathing Space Thailand addictions treatment program is designed to enable our clients to find practical and achievable methods of alleviating tension, anxiety and stress – triggers for relapse back into active addiction. Breathing Space Thailand provides its clients with a whole person (mind, body and soul) approach to drug or alcohol addiction treatment and for this reason we include a range of complementary therapies designed specifically to provide you with the strongest possible starting point in your ongoing recovery from addiction.
Eastern and Western Complementary Therapies
We offer several Eastern and Western complementary therapies to complement 12-step drug and alcohol treatment. The Breathing Space Thailand addiction treatment program integrates holistic therapies to complement the bio-psychological process of recovery. Our complementary therapies have been designed to restore the body to its naturally healthy state and provide a clearer mental focus.
Yoga
There are numerous ways that Yoga can help to enhance the process of treatment of drug and alcohol addiction during time in the Breathing Space Thailand program.
Enhanced physical health
Going through an addiction treatment program and maintaining recovery can be challenging. Clients who are in better physical shape may have an advantage over those who are not. Yoga is fantastic exercise. Breathing Space Thailand provides daily Yoga classes that strengthen your physical condition.
Enhanced mental focus
Many clients attending residential treatment suffer from worry and distractions beyond the program, in the lives they left behind. Yoga offers our clients a focus on the immediate situation, avoiding any unnecessary worries or temptations.
Finding balance
Yoga is all about finding that perfect balance between the mind, body and spirit. Yoga is an excellent way of restoring and maintaining a perspective of calm and focus that presents our clients with a refreshing counter-balance to the chaos that life was, during active addiction.
Personal Training
Our personal trainer will assess you to create your individualized health and fitness program. The use of the gym and involvement in any other aspect of physical exercise should only ever complement the therapeutic work you are undertaking whilst at Breathing Space Thailand. It’s about finding a balance! Exercise should never become a way of avoiding your feelings. Therefore, your personal trainer will work with you to find a healthy approach to exercise.
Body Balance
Body balance is a combination of three well-established disciplines: Tai Chi, Pilates and Yoga. Body balance is a mind and body fitness programme set to uplifting music that promotes strength, flexibility, concentration, relaxation and self-awareness. It combines traditional eastern disciplines such as controlled breathing and conscious relaxation with dynamic new techniques.
Body balance is ideal for those people approaching exercise who might very well be feeling tired, weary and lethargic, as many people do in early recovery from addiction and because body balance is a low impact workout, it’s a perfect introduction back into regular physical activity. Body balance also promotes flexibility and strength.
The Different Elements of Body Balance Explained
Pilates
Developed in the 1920s by the legendary physical trainer and founder of the Pilates Studio’s, Joseph H. Pilates, The Pilates Method is an exercise system focused on improving flexibility and strength for the total body without building bulk. Not surprisingly, some of the first people to use the Pilates Method were dancers such as Martha Graham and George Balanchine.
The Pilates Method is not just exercise however. It is a series of controlled movements engaging your body and mind, performed on specifically designed exercise apparatus and supervised by extensively trained teachers.
Tai Chi
There is some contention as to the origins of Tai Chi. It was founded around 1390 by Chang San-Feng who developed the 13 basic postures. Tai Chi promotes suppleness and elasticity as opposed to hardness and force. It is essentially a moving form of yoga and meditation.
Yoga
Developed in India, with a history of more than 5 millennia. Yoga focuses around body postures known as Asana, with meditation and breathing. The modern understanding of Yoga is the improvement of mental-awareness, physical fitness and stress control.
Yoga can relieve symptoms of stress
Endocrine (Glands) – Cleanses with glands and helps in regulation of the metabolism through increase of hormone production.
Respiratory / Cardiovascular – Heart is strengthened and massaged, lung capacity increases and the bronchioles maintain their elasticity
Lymphatic / Immune system – balances and strengthens the immune cells increasing the body’s ability to fight infection. The lymph glands are stimulated helping the drainage of the body tissues.
What part of my body is worked when I perform Body Balance?
The Skeleton
Body Balance allows the spine to move in all directions therefore promoting strength and flexibility by correcting alignment, freeing joints and releasing pressure. This stimulates circulation, and corrects poor posture. Pain and tension usually leave the body
The Muscles
Tense muscles are usually short and tight. Yoga postures help to relax and lengthen all muscles with a slow non-violent stretch, relieving tension and lowering risk of muscle strain or injury.
What are the benefits of Body Balance?
You will feel stronger both physically and mentally and your posture will very quickly improve. You will become more flexible and more physically and mentally aware. Body Balance is also known to relieve pain, reduce stress and increases endurance. It can also allow you to achieve body-symmetry, i.e. remove the tendency for people to have a weak side to their body.
Breathing Space Spa Treatments
At Breathing Space Thailand, the inclusion of spa treatment is not for beautification purposes but rather to offer several other benefits for people in early recovery from addiction and this is the key reason why spa treatment is included in our program.
Spa treatment can help to reduce stress, soothes your muscles, and provide overall relaxation for your mind and body. The Breathing Space Thailand spa provides a new, effective and healthy way for our clients to relax, renew and re-focus and is the kind of activity we would work together with you to include in your individualized after-treatment schedule, as an ongoing activity to continue when you return to your everyday life.
Massage is considered as an effective technique of body treatment. Massage helps to lighten muscle rigidity, cramps, or tremors and helps to alleviate tension, anxiety and stress – triggers for relapse back into active addiction. Spa treatments, including massage, sauna and steam are particularly well-suited to people in early and ongoing recovery from addictions, especially for those who have recently completed a medical detoxification.
